SISTER WISDOM IS SPECIAL

SISTER WISDOM IS SPECIAL

One of the most consistent and significant changes in the music industry last year was the success of sounds that were relatively far from POPular music often related to dance music. The success of sounds like ‘Fada Fada’ by Phyno, ‘Skin Tight’ by Mr. Eazi and even recently Runtown’s ‘Mad Over You’ were noteworthy. The moral of the story is that good music is good music no matter the genre and that’s the reason why I think a lot of artistes doing alternative music like Funbi, and Johnny Drille are benefiting from this atmosphere. Sister Wisdom is also one of the alternative music artistes getting her fair share. Her first single ‘Beautiful’ was released on the 9th of Dec 2015 and the second and third singles ‘Mr John’ and ‘Move’ are currently enjoying great reviews and radio plays.

Introduce yourself and tell us how music started for?

My full name is WISDOM TOYIN IGBAFEN also known as Sister Wisdom; I am a graduate of Computer Science from Leads University Ibadan, the first child of three kids. Music for me started while I was a kid, my dad loves music so I was exposed to different sounds from a young age but professionally it started in 2015. I released my first single on the 9th of December 2015, which was the same year I performed at my first major event ‘The International Music Concert’ held at The LoveWorld Convocation Arena, Ikeja. Since then I went on to collaborate with Johnny Drille on my second single ‘Mr John’ and that made the big difference for me. My genre is Alternative Soul, it’s a fusion of different sounds with a strong influence of Soul.

What is it about the music industry today that is a NO-NO for you and which is a Yes-Yes?

Hmmm, the No-No for me is content, most of the sounds out there are either saying the same thing or not making sense at all and the videos have little or no scripting. The Yes-Yes for me is the fact that a lot of people are now interested in good music and are supporting good music. Also, the fact that artistes from our country are now making global impact e.g. Sinach, is an indication that our sound can be exported if properly done.

What is your perception of alternative music in Nigeria and who are some of your colleagues keeping that flag flying?

Alternative music is the future in Nigeria, people like Johnny Drille, Clay (rock), Jodeep, Jessica Bongos, Ric Hassani have really set the standard. Johnny Drille is the ambassador of alternative music as far as I am concerned and it’s good for the music industry. In a nut shell alternative music is good music.

Name the artistes and producers you will love to record with?

Waoh, Cobhams, Johnny Drille who I have worked with already and will still do in the future, Mayomusic, Synx, Chordratic Beat, Vtek and anyone I meet that understands my sound. And for the artistes I will love to work with, it’s a very long list so I’ll list a few: Eben, Cobhams, Sinach, Timi Dakolo, Adaehi, Clay, Lynxxx, Edward, etc. The list is very long and I am very open to fresh acts with unique sounds. I love to experiment.
