‘THE TRUTH’ ABOUT MAKA
‘Making this EP came as true and pure to me as anything I’ve ever done. I wasn’t trying to please anyone but myself’- Maka
If diversity is one of the reasons that have added value and made the Nigerian music industry unpredictable, worthy of commendation and increased curiosity outside the shores of the country, then Maka is one of the artistes making such things happen. This eclectic Nigerian soul singer has been hailed as “one of Africa’s best kept musical secrets.” But the secret is officially out now that she’s unleashed her debut EP, The Truth. Hip-hop DJ/producer, Teck-Zilla has provided the textured, multifaceted sonic groundwork for Maka to deliver her heart on a platter with each sincerely constructed track. According to Maka, “Making this EP came as true and pure to me as anything I’ve ever done. I wasn’t trying to please anyone but myself. Working with Teck-Zilla never felt contrived, we weren’t rushed or disturbed, and we had the freedom to create whatever we wanted. That’s where the title of the record comes from, in the sense that creating it was indeed true.”
Born Nwamaka Sam-Ejehu, Maka is an eclectic singer and songwriter. This Lawyer by profession ventured into the music industry as an undergraduate of the University of Lagos, recording her first song ‘Angry’ for the Don Jazzy Enigma Freestyle Competition. She then debuted her first official single ‘Coming Out’, following that up with ‘No Dull’, ‘Oya’, ‘Malera’, and ‘Loving You’ featuring RnB singer Byno which won Beat FM’s FreshBeats competition for March 2012. Maka is also credited for writing the theme song for Indigo, a new entry music series showing on Ebony TV. Her video release also includes ‘Mu Na Gi’ (You and I), which is one of the songs in her 7 track EP album. Maka recently released her full EP album with concerts in Lagos and Abuja. The MAKA EP Concert was recorded as a blast.
