ADEKUNLE NAMES ARE WRITTEN IN GOLD
As the Nigeria music industry continues to evolve with several players calling the shots, at the end of the day, what will matter the most is how we will all be remembered. While the artistes are dictating the tunes and the puppet masters across various field (video directors, music producers, journalist, OAP’s, DJ’s to name a few) are pulling the strings, when the music reaches the climax, the orchestra stops playing and the cotton are pulled down, in what colour will your name be written?
I was reading a book titled Legend of the Nigerian Music Industry. This book was documentation about some of the best musicians to ever surface in music industry. The detailing and information put together by some of the best journalists in this country is worthy of awards but what struck me the most are the few number of musician-worthy of pages and mentions. This proves that it’s only the artiste/musician/performer with the most influencing content that cuts across boundaries and age grade that will have their names written in gold. It’s only the artistes with content that can stand the test of time, season and trends that will be remembered as great.
As the sun set and I made it through reading all the pages in the book, the nagging question that pops up is; How many artistes today will be remember with their names written in gold? Let forget the hype, the shenanigans associated with today’s industry, what will matter at the end of the day is how long will the songs from your favorite artiste be relevant?
The artiste Prince just passed on but his song Purple Rain remains a classic, can we say same of some artistes tomorrow? Well I know some artistes like 2Baba, Asa, Brymo and the likes of Adekunle Gold will forever be remembered and their names will be written in gold. While his peers were fighting to be relevant and their sounds were dictated by trend, Adekunle Gold music was driven by all the laws that have produced all the evergreen songs to ever come out of Nigeria. He was more about content and his content created its own trend the world is now enjoying. From hits like Orente, Pick Up and Ready, you can now see the reason why his name will forever be written in gold.
