For me, among the artistes with the most refreshing content this year is
Ckay. It takes a lot these days for artistes to deliver a timeless head
bumping and club banging song that stands out on its own without the trendy
shaku-shaku syndrome. In an industry where established artistes are
struggling to have a hit that is extra-ordinary outside the trends, Ckay’s
“Container” is a firecracker. I understand that the society is oblivious to
what’s new but this brand called Ckay (performing artiste and music
producer) will form the standing structure in the music industry from now
till the unknown future.

After kick starting his love for music as a member of musical trio called
Cre8tive, Ckay moved from Kaduna to Lagos in 2014 to pursue fulfillment in
the music industry. By the year 2015, he found a home at Chocolate City. He
went on to meet Moti Cakes, an A&R for Chocolate City Music, in January
2015. He got his music across to him and from there he began working with
Chocolate City Music as a production intern. He worked at the studio until
later when he signed a production contract with the label. The first song
he produced while there was “Third Mainland Bridge” by MI ft Moti Cakes. He
went on to produce other notable songs such as “Miracle” and “Ella” by Dice
Ailes, “Give Them” by Koker, “Your Father” by MI, “Wats D Level?” by MI
(featuring Ckay on the chorus), “Bebe” by DJ Lambo featuring Skales and
Victoria Kimani, “Kunta Kunte” featuring Mr Real and Small Doctor.

As a performing artiste, Ckay’s debut single is “Nkechi Turn Up” featuring
notable comedian, Nedu. He followed up with “Gaddemit” which featured DMW
rapper Dremo. He released his first (unofficial) body of work the 6-track
EP “Who The F**k is Ckay?” to much acclaim. His most recent release
“Container” is burning the airways with massive rotations. The hard-hitting
dance track which fuses gqom, jazz and afrobeat is a fan favorite. If we go
by the books, the steps potential artistes should go through to understand
the nitty-gritty of the music industry and prepare for takeover, Ckay has
walked that line, paid his dues and is now aiming for his own major chunk
of shares in the music industry’s national cake.
