IMMACULATE’S CAREER IS ON THE UP
‘Looking back to my music journey in this industry of ours, I have
learnt that music business isn’t about having the talent to either do
music, produce music or having a good voice; it is about understanding
your craft, knowing your target market (audience) and what exactly
they want, knowing the right people, having the right team, knowing
the right channels to distribute your product (music), getting things
done EFFECTIVELY and EFFICIENTLY’ – Immaculate
I’m yet to meet anyone that understands the music industry who will
argue against the fact that this lady is super talented. It wasn’t
just because she was the first runner up at the 2013 MTN Project Fame
but because she had put in the shift in the Nigerian music industry.
Like we all know, the music circle over here is far more unpredictable
than the unpredictability of the western market. That said, she’s been
grinding. It’s a fact she has exited Tee-Y Mix’s Vivace records and
it’s also a fact that she’s got a lot going on for her with her music.
I caught up with her after she released a new single “Obiyekum.”
In detail, kindly tell us about all that have transpired with your
brand in the last one year leading to your latest single.
‘In the last one year a whole lot has transpired with my brand – from
being out of a label to having to wait a bit to finalize the end on my
contract and then going fully independent as an artiste, a female
artiste at that. It has been a lot of work and has not been easy but
it has certainly been worth it! My brand has graduated from being
just a singer, songwriter and extraordinary performer to being a
thespian, film actor and a label owner. Nothing excites me more than
seeing positive movement and growth even in the midst of so many
challenges. It’s been an amazing one year seeing my brand mature in every
dimension – from playing as a Lead Actor in “Heartbeat the Musical,”
one of the best musical stage plays in Nigeria produced by Olu Jacobs
and Joke Silva, to releasing my first single “Obiyekum” under the
“Dache Entertainment” imprint. Even within the year, I had also
dropped singles like “Sugalala” and “Love Affair” to add it’s to my ever
growing repertoire.’
What is the inspiration behind the new single and what should your
audience expect from you by close of the year?
‘The inspiration behind my new single “Obiyekum” which means my
companion (Body and Soul) is simply L O V E and the beautiful feeling
one gets when in love with another in mind, body and soul. I basically
love LOVE and it gives me great joy to showcase love in my songs. In
the end, the world becomes a better place when we all have the ability
to love one another. What the world truly needs is LOVE!
‘Currently I am nearly done recording an EP that will have between 6
to 8 songs produced by my former label owner and big brother – the
legendary Tee-Y Mix during the 4th quarter of the year. I am super
excited with this project and the works within it and really can’t
wait to share my music to my Gogobabies (that’s what I call my fans)
and the unsuspecting world in general. Everyone should expect an EP
consisting of different genres of music as the brand IMMACULATE DACHE
IS very versatile and eclectic.’
Looking back at your music journey in the industry, what have you
learn so far about the music business, about record deals and how the
music keeps evolving?
‘Looking back to my music journey in this industry of ours, I have
learnt that music business isn’t about having the talent to either do
music, produce music or having a good voice; it is about understanding
your craft, knowing your target market (audience) and what exactly
they want, knowing the right people, having the right team, knowing
the right channels to distribute your product (music), getting things
done EFFECTIVELY and EFFICIENTLY, and above all, being CONSISTENT
because that itself is KEY! I also admit that the lack of funds
(money) to promote one’s music can be very frustrating but believing
in what you do with so much consistency, resilience, ambition and most
importantly prayers; everything would eventually fall into place. One
should never give up on one’s dreams.
‘What I have learnt from record deals is that it is not bad to sign a
record deal (isn’t that what every aspiring artiste craves for?) but
it is very important to be very AWARE of what you are signing as an
individual and be sure to state what exactly you want from the deal
and have it in your consciousness that this is no favour (unless an
angel investor) but a BUSINESS BETWEEN BOTH PARTIES where money that
is spent is recouped once money is made, so you don’t end up feeling
used at the end of the rainbow.’
Quick message to your legion of fans?
‘To my ever supportive GOGOBABIES, I so much appreciate you all and I
want to please urge you to keep believing in yourselves and what you
do, no matter how slowly it seems to progress. Trust me, it will
surely end in praise in no time. I love you all. Never stop believing
in LOVE! Xoxo…
‘Thank you so much brother for always believing and supporting
