JOSEPHINE CHUKWU – Ramp calling
To all aspiring models, I’d say, “If you dare to dream, dream big and if your dreams don’t scare you, dream bigger
Words by Sesan Adeniji
As someone that follows the fashion industry through the lens of models, the year 2018 will be labeled encouraging. Never before have we witnessed an outpouring of potential models, modeling agencies and activations from tertiary institution levels to those organized by the major players.
On the grassroots stages in Nigeria, the interest to join the modeling industry is almost on the same level with those making entrée into the music industry. What’s new on the catwalk reflects what models like Josephine Chukwu is bringing to the industry. Standing 5feet 8inches, Waist: 28, Bust: 34 and Hips: 36, this lady is riding with her A-game. She will become one of the few that will score an exclusive for fashion labels and will dominate runway, billboards and commercials in the coming months.
“First of all, I want to say thank you for this opportunity. I am from Abia state but I was born in Bénin Republic, Cotonou and I grew up in Jos, Plateau state. I’m the second child; I have an elder sister and two younger brothers. I am a student of University of Jos, studying English Education.
Growing up, I developed keen interest in fashion. I would wear heels and catwalk, thereby making the world my runway. I started modeling because its something I’m passionate about. I love makeup and all the breathtaking creativity associated with it.
Modeling is a great job but it’s not an easy one. The notion that modeling is all about makeup and pictures, is far from the truth. It takes long hours, hard work practice, endurance and dedication. Being a model, the journey hasn’t been easy with school and other things especially when you have so many responsibilities.
Also, the fact that models are often underpaid and disrespected can be discouraging but that shouldn’t be a reason to give up because the future is bright. The sooner everyone come to terms with the reality that without models, fashion shows can’t hold, sales figures will stagnate and commercials will loss it X factors; then models will be respected the more.
I intend to achieve a lot with modeling and change the world. To all aspiring models, I’d say, “If you dare to dream, dream big and if your dreams don’t scare you, dream bigger”. To all models, “Keep your heels, head and standards high” – Josephine Chukwu
