KEMI SMALLZZ OF CITY 105.1FM – ‘NEVER ASSUME THAT PEOPLE KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT WITHOUT EXPLANATION’
KEMI SMALLZZ OF CITY 105.1FM ANSWERS 6 MYSTREETZ QUESTIONS
When next your media promotion head to the mainland in Lagos, her name should be the first on your scale of preference. She’s arguably the most relevant OAP on that part of the state. Her entertaining and educative insight is holding the audience spellbound. She’s driving the morning belt on CityFm faster, more exciting almost better than the best F1 drivers in recent times. Small in stature but mighty at heart, she represents one of the few most listened to on-air personalities in the city of Lagos. If you doubt me, when you wake up tomorrow, tune in to City 105.1FM to listen to her. You will definitely enjoy your Breakfast in the City……of Lagos.
Who am I?
My name is Oluwakemi Itari Owatemi aka Kemi Smallzz, Dad is from Ondo state, mum is from Bayelsa and my maternal grandmother [R.I.P] is Igbo, so I consider myself a Nigerian Half caste if that exists. I am 23 years old, born January, and I love being a Capricorn. I am the first born of five, Studied English at the University of Lagos, I love art and everything it represents (dad is an artist and mum is an interior decorator), I think art is in my genes. I am 5ft tall or short, depends on how you choose to look at it. I am very myopic (-8), wear contact lenses during the day and glasses at night when I am by myself. I love radio, always have, always will (sounds a little corny, but it’s as honest as it gets). I have been on radio for about two years now.
What is most exciting about my show?
The most exciting thing about my current radio programme (breakfast in the city), is the listeners. It gives me unexplainable joy when a listener calls in and they sound really happy to be talking to me. The fact that I can make people feel good, that I may not know what they look like, or even their name, but I make them smile, make them dance, make them forget their problems even if it for a moment, all because they are listening to the sound of my voice, That is exciting, not forgetting the music as well.
How I am doing online?
My social media life is buzzing, in a good way, especially on instagram (@kemismallzz on everything by the way, had to plug that in). I think you can tell a lot about me from my social media, from my dress sense to the kind of music I like, to my friends. It is fun, plus I like pictures, especially pictures that tell a story, so instagram it is for me.
My person
I would describe myself as a happy( I think happiness is key},always smiling(I have laugh lines) , fun ,easy going, outspoken ,lively ,positive human being. I love to wear my heart on my sleeve. I try to actually live as opposed to just existing, I try to find happiness in the little things like books, suya , music, and the likes.
My daily rituals before going on-air
My first do of radio is show prep and research, you need to constantly know what you are going to talk about on the show before you go on air, in other words, finish the show on paper before you even start the show. Always give out meaningful information and let people learn something new each time your show is on. Play a lot of good music, be as real as possible and remember to breathe. My motto for my show is “at every point in time when a listener tunes in, make sure you are saying or playing something that will make them stay and tune in again every other time”. When it comes to the don’t, do not talk too much, never assume that people know what you are talking about without explanation, do not make promises you have no intentions of fulfilling, in other words, never lie to your listeners, they never forget.
This is how I prioritise these things
Love , friendship, money, sex, cooking, eating out, and partying.
If not Radio…
Present on television most definitely, I would like to delve into production, I mean create content for TV shows, music videos and the like, also a little bit of designing, have my own clothing line and stuff
