LIL KESH LEAVES Y.B.N.L-THE PROTÉGÉ BECOMES HIS OWN KING
THE PROTÉGÉ BECOMES HIS OWN KING–
LIL KESH SIGNED TO Y.A.G.I RECORDS
While the industry is still in topsy-turvy over the news making rounds about Lil Kesh’s exit from Olamide’ s Y.B.N.L records, I took the liberty to assuage my journalistic instinct. It took me just about a few minutes to put a call through to Lil Kesh to hear from the horse’s mouth.
‘Yes I am no longer a recording artistes under Y.B.N.L. I am now signed with Y.A.G.I records. This is my indie label. I am still cool with Y.B.N.L and my record label will slightly be affiliated with Y.B.N.L. We will still have a lot to do together. My contract with Y.B.NL ended about two week ago – Lil Kesh
Depending on which side of the divide you stand and how sound you can intellectually and effectively process stories without bias, this will help in determining and reaching an informed conclusion about this news. In this part of the world, several people mostly associate news of this nature to doom on the part of the breakaway artiste but that is not an acceptable fact. When a child is born into a royal family, he or she becomes an heir to the throne. The heir becomes more like a protégé and the protégé someday ascends to the throne. What becomes of the new king is now dependent on how ready he or she is to take responsibilities.
The marriage between Olamide and Lil Kesh started in April 2014 when Olamide signed up Lil Kesh and Viktoh. At that time, both were underground acts from his hood, Bariga. Lil Kesh’s debut single ‘Shoki’ became an instant hit – so much so that just a few months after (November 2014), he was on stage with Davido and Olamide performing at the Channel O Music Video Awards.
June 2015, Olamide embarked on a Twitter rant to explain that he signed only 2 years deal with his new acts after which he hopes they’ll be good enough to stand on their own.Not long after, Lil Kesh moved out from his mainland residence to a posh apartment in Chevron drive, Lekki and set up a home studio where he finished the recording of his first album ‘Y.A.G.I’.
In March 2016, he officially released his debut album under the YBNL imprint
With the way the conversation went with Kesh and myself, they seem to be no issues between Y.B.NL and Kesh or with the boss Olamide. It’s interesting to note that there is a sort of pally pally relationship between the two and Kesh seem to have a lot of creative control in the arrangement since he recorded and completed his debut in his personal studio. One thing also is clear and that is the fact that Olamide is still confident about his relevance in the industry for quite some time to come so he had no problems letting his beloved protégé go this early. I think it’s time perhaps for Kesh to move on to a different phase. Maybe its time for the protégé to become his own king!
