Liquorose’s Backstory – The Dancer, Actor, musician and BBN Runner-up

Roseline Omokhoa Afije, popularly known as Liquorose, emerged as the runner-up at the just concluded Big Brother Naija season 6. Even though she missed out on the coveted prize, she won the hearts of many. To know her backstory will make anyone further fall in love with who she is becoming. She has gone through the blood, sweat, and tears to get to where she’s today in the Nigerian entertainment industry. Her ascension to fame is a remarkable anecdote to encourage every young girl in the industry who dares to reach for the sky.

As an active viewer who took stock of all the conversations during the ten weeks that the BBN show was live on TV, it was easy to conclude that a legion of the audience only knows Liquorose as a dancer. But she’s much more. As a choreographer-cum-video girl, actor, and sometimes into styling, she’s known for her exceptional work ethic. She also maintained high moral standards in an industry littered with production boys who lack such decency influenced by their transactional modus operandi towards female creatives.

From the beginning, alongside Emmanuella Odiley and Ifeoma Efokwu (semi-finalist at Maltina Dance All), they formed a group called Girls Got Bold (GGB) in 2014. Before then, individually, they have appeared in several music videos. As of today, Liquorose and her colleague’s combined music video appearance is over one hundred. The content on their Instagram pages and their dance covers to several hits songs on their YouTube will attest to why they are highly sought-after. They continue to put in the work.

Liquorose’s GGB Dance Crew was a breath of fresh air. With the sole aim to create progressive platforms for the dance industry, GGB brought aesthetics into so many music videos during those years when choreographers were underpaid, undervalued, and underappreciated. Alongside her colleagues, Liquorose once told me that she aims to inspire and encourage young women to be bold enough to pursue and achieve their dreams. Her becoming a finalist on BBN, the most viewed show in Africa, it’s a win for all dancers.

Some of the videos that Liquoose and her GGB Dance crew have featured include “Don’t Tell Me Nonsense” by D’banj. Ice Prince – “Oleku“, Olamide – “Shakitibobo” and “Durosoke“, Wande Coal – “Baby Hello“, Banky W – “Good Good Loving“, Patoranking – “Alubarika“, Dammy Krane – “Sabi Dance“, Falz – “High Class“, and Sean Tizzle – “Mama Eh“. Reminisce – “Fantasi“, Falz- “Currency“, Flavour featuring Wande Coal – “Wake Up“, Burna Boy – “Run My Race“, Lil Kesh – “Shoki“, Orezi – “Shoki“, P-square featuring T. I – “Ejeajo“. The listed are amongst many others. She has perfectly portrayed her roles in all the videos she has appeared inside.

As an actor, in 2012/2013, she had a role in “The Johnsons”. But her breakthrough came with her eye-catching character in the 2015 Clarence Peter’s award-winning short film “Hex”. According to Rotimi Oshodi – one of the screenwriters of Hex, Liquorose was naturally nervous about being an actor in her first dramatic role. But she delivered. She was the emotional center of the HEX world. She was the one that connected all her other co-stars to the Plot of the short film. It was a lot of responsibility, but she handled the pressure admirably. She also starred in the movie titled “The OAP” in 2017”.

Liquorose’s video-girl acting role is symbolic of her skillfulness. Rotimi has also watched her play those characters on his music video set. According to him, ”She brings versatility to her performances. She can be the sweet girl Next Door that is also your Homie. Liquorose has an urban and tomboy side to her. She’s not your typical vogue magazine-looking model. But one essential trait about her is the ability to show emotions through her facial expression. There’s something about the way she carries herself that is very relatable and charming.

As a dancer, Liquorose and her GGB have also appeared in TV commercials. She was in GLO Greener Pastures (I don Port), GLO Centenary, GLO P-square television commercials, and MTN Pulse TVC. Several directors that have worked with her attest to her awe-inspiring ability. With close to a million followers on her Instagram account before her Big Brother Naija adventure, she was also an influencer beauty hair brand hired for product visibility. Her followers are sailing towards the two million numbers. Her several years of hard work are paying off. Liquorose’s future endorsement fees are rising.

As a performing artist, she and her crew have two songs to their names. March 2015, they made history by releasing their debut single called “Disco” that featured Ketchup and Pusha, produced by Big Foot. Tosin Igho directed the music video. The audio gained traction on the radio while the video enjoyed rotation on television.

September 2021, they released their sophomore song called “Vibes”, produced by EOD. In 2016, Rose’s GGB collaborated with Skales when they released a special music video for “Ajaga” – a song featuring Timaya and Davido. Rose has paid her dues.

As a native of Edo state, an alumnus of Itire primary school, Del International College, the University Of Lagos where she studied Christian Religious Studies, Liquorose has patiently walked her way up. Meticulously consistent with her craft, she leaves no stone unturned when pushing her brand.

Looking back at the way she comports herself without any controversy during the BBN show, it’s safe to say she has walked on water. With her newfound fame rightly earned with grit, the sky is her starting point. Knowing that she humbly wants to become one of the change-makers in the world, we can’t wait to celebrate her next conquest.
