Mahogany Obodozie ‘The On-air dynamite’
Listening to Mahogany Obodozie on the breakfast show on Cool 96.9FM Lagos is as nourishing as sipping a full cup of beverage after brunch and as stimulating as having an energy drink at lunch. With the vibrancy of a femcee, the voice and look of a rock star mashed-up with the sexiness of a video girl, her presentation style is refreshingly captivating. Mahogany is not your regular OAP. Excitingly, she is ‘The on-air dynamite’ that daily holds the Lagos audience spellbound.
According to her, “I am a native of Anambra state. I think I can describe myself as someone fun to hang around. I’m a Taurus, so I bring the hype. But then I’m also a Gemini moon, so I can easily be the polar opposite and be on DND mode comfy in my space *laughs*. I’m adventurous, kind, spirited, and savage. My Dad is a Retired Ambassador, Mom is a Research Pharmaceutical scientist, so my growing up was pretty neat. I’ve got four siblings, three brothers, and a sister.
In 2010, as a year 2 Mass Communication student of Covenant University, Ota, I did my internship at Cool FM Abuja. At that time, there were no programs for interns. My mom talked to the then Head of station (Late Sophie Tarafa) about creating an internship program with the words, hire her not because she is my daughter, but because you will not regret it. That was where my career began. I scored an A+. And I kept working there on holidays till I graduated in 2012, and for eight months after that. I left the radio for a while but returned in 2016 as a host at Urban Radio 94.5FM Enugu.
In November 2017, Cool FM Abuja snatched me back. It was familiar, like coming home. But this time, I wasn’t an intern; I was the new co-host of The Good Morning Nigeria Show. In March 2020, I was promoted and moved to Cool FM Lagos. Now, alongside Mannie, I co-host the daily breakfast show 5 am – 9 am Monday – Friday. The Cool 96.9FM Lagos is the best radio station I have worked at so far. I will keep putting in the work to make our daily show one of the best. What I love about myself and what makes me stand out is my originality. I pride myself on being me. Being fake is a turn-off for me. So I don’t like to do or be around it”.
