MAVIN RECORDS AND IYANYA — A DEAL THAT LACKS SPECIFICS
MAVIN RECORDS AND IYANYA — A DEAL THAT LACKS SPECIFICS
On Monday 31th, 2016, I woke up to the Instagram post from Mavin Records that says @mavinrecords and @iyanya are #up2sumting. One does not need a rocket scientist to realize these two have signed some sort of deal. After several calls and search, I finally got my hands on the press release sent from Mavin Records but this release lacks specifics. In this day and age, I think the music industry has gone far beyond any form of hype or half baked information.
The caption reads, ‘Iyanya Joins Mavin Records, Drops New Single With Don Jazzy and Dr. Sid’. This headline is savage (no pun intended). If this is supposed to be a record deal, why not say it. If the deal is a record deal, does it include; production, distribution and publishing? How many years deal is it and how many albums? The lack of specifics between artistes and their record labels are a major stumbling block in this industry. Should we wait until things fall apart before we begin to hear words like ‘Had I known’? This reminds me of the deal between Ruggedman and Little Fish records. Twenty-four months after they held a press conference announcing the deal, it was sad to know that the signing we were part of was just a scam. The two intended to sign the deal but fell out due to the ever reliable phrase ‘irreconcilable differences’.
If both Mavin records and Iyanya are as professional as they claim to be, the first press release to announce such a deal could (and should) have provided better information. This is 2016; we are way better than this. Kindly read through this press release and find me something significant, find me an element of anything that even remotely bears semblance to a professional deal:
‘Iyanya Joins Mavin Records, Drops New Single With Don Jazzy and Dr. Sid.
After months of speculation about his future, Iyanya has finally broken the silence by announcing that he is officially joining Mavin Records with the release of a new song featuring Don Jazzy and Dr. Sid. The new hit tune titled “Up 2 Sumting” is produced by Mavin Records head-honcho, Don Jazzy. It was released on Monday, October 31, which coincides with the singer’s 30th birthday. With this new move, Iyanya joins other artistes on the record label including Tiwa Savage, Dr. Sid, D’Prince, Korede Bello, Reekado Banks and Di’Ja. In his own words, Iyanya said, “I am at a decision-making curve in my music career where I have to make the right professional and creative decisions. At this point, I realize the need to put in solid structures in place to move to the next level of my career. I think I have found that professional and creative backbone in Mavin Records.”
Don Jazzy, who broke the news on his Twitter handle on Monday, was also excited about the new partnership.
“Iyanya brings his own unique style and sound to the Mavin Records family,” he said.
“From the first time I stepped into the studio with him, there was an instant chemistry and energy. He is an amazing talent and he has great musical versatility. This is an exciting time for us and our fans have a lot of great music to look forward to.”
The groundbreaking move is the Cross River State born singer’s first major one after his decision to sign a management deal with leading creative talent agency, Temple Management Company as part of efforts to launch a new phase of his career.
