MELODY HASSAN – ‘Godiva Princess’ Of City 105.1FM
Bonny and Brainy, she’s arguably one of the most entertaining new generation Nigerian radio broadcasters in the system today. Considering her literary proficiency – that alter ego could be described as bluestocking; but there’s more to this lady than meet the eyes. Magically, she’s gradually transforming to a gem. Her persona is indicative of trappings of iconic female broadcasters in this country.

From first glance, Melody Hassan could pass as naïve and quiet but that’s far from her explosive, energetic and entertaining presentation style on her show ‘City Café’ on City 105.1 FM. With eyes for talents, ears for good music with excellent communication skills, her playlist is eclectic. She’s credited with one of the most interestingly unscripted interview session on radio. But how did this trained biologist transformed into an amazing broadcaster? Here’s her story.
I didn’t set out to become a radio broadcaster. It’s more like ‘radio found me’
“Growing up, I was extremely introverted, and why? -I was the type of kid who cried when nominated to address the classmates or represent the school at debates. You know how messed up our educational system in Nigeria is; almost everything is dependent on your grade.
I was one of the best in English language and literature, so my teacher, out of his magnanimity, automatically assumed I’d be a fantastic debater, which I wasn’t, mainly because of our typical teachers’ skewed perception of the innate ability of a child.
I graduated from the University of Lagos, where I studied Cell Biology and Genetics. I served as a youth corps member at my current place of work, and that kick-started my broadcasting career. I didn’t set out to become a radio broadcaster. It’s more like ‘radio found me’. I always assumed I’ll end up in a laboratory with blood samples, trying to find the cure to HIV or Cancer, but here I am.
The experience has been an amazing learning process, but fun still. I currently host the mid-morning show (City Cafe) on City105.1 FM. It’s a game and music-driven show -super lit! You should tune in sometime… *Winks. I’m also a lover of literature and social issues, so I write articles that highlight issues women face in different facets of their lives.
My Views on the Industry
Young people (the #millennials) are getting representation in the industry and it’s about time. It’s even more evident in the music industry. Several artists with music on SoundCloud – the underground guys are getting recognition even as an independent artiste. These folks put in work and they pay attention to details; the aesthetics, the sound et al. So, it’s a beautiful time to be a young person in the industry.
The recognition can be more though, but we’re getting there, I’m proud to be a young person in the Industry right now. I have plans underway to start something to further push these young guys and their music. Just keep your fingers crossed and watch out for #Melody’sMelodies ” – Melody Hassan
