Overcoming Challenges; The Stories Behind The Search For MTN Y’ello Star Winner
Behind the glitz and glamour of the MTN Yello Star aired on TV and all the mouth-watering weekly performances from contestants we watched on our mobile phones, there are also more revealing and exciting stories during the early online audition stages. During the search for the best musical talents across the country, the production team came across potential vocalists that defied the odds and those that exhibit courage, reflecting stories that positively touch lives – the stories that were difficult to ignore.

As we celebrate Dotti that won the competition and the 5-runner-up, we have also decided to take a step back to shine the spotlight as we showcase in this editorial some human-interest stories behind the story. Below are tales of some selected contestants at the early stage of online auditions that displayed sheer determination, courage, and ability to overcome challenges.
Ruth Odalonu – A contestant that was blind delivered one of the most heartfelt performances. She sang with so much courage that held everyone spellbound. The online audition provided equal opportunity for everyone. She auditioned from the comfort of her personal space at her own time.
Oluwaseun Elizabeth – A Yoruba traditional poet and chanter who is in her mid 50ties delivered a folklore performance that gives credence to how rich the various Nigerian cultural heritages are. The online audition allowed everyone to strive for fame while eliminating the stress of queuing up at the audition venues.
Emmanuel Solomon – His performance exemplifies courage, determination, and respect. While auditioning in his room, we heard the voice of his mother calling him, needing his attention. Faced with the obstacle of choosing between his mother and the audition, he found a creative way to balance both – he overcame both challenges. It was heartwarming watching.
Eniola Oyinkansola & Noel Odunsi – During the Coronavirus travel restrictions, two contestants on holiday travel could not return to Nigeria. Eniola Oyinkansola was unable to fly out of Canada, while Noel Odunsi got held in South Africa.
Thanks to the award-winning Y’ello Star online auditions platform, they both overcame the challenges; they auditioned from their location.
Adeshola Adeshina – His audition was one of the most courageous that we came across. He was hospitalized during the early audition stage. Yet, with a drip in his hand from his hospital room, he decided to audition.
Conrad Chitambala (African Voices) – Everywhere you Go. Meet the team that defied geographical barriers to have their voices heard at the audition. Despite them being a Kenyan group based in Lusaka, they heard about the show, put in for it, and auditioned from Kenya.
