On my last visit to Benin city on a radio tour for Mystreetz magazine, I met with several well-drilled OAPs and was introduced to a handful of talented guys with huge cult-like followership within the music and art industry in that state. Among several names that piqued my curiosity, Rooky Kamiz particularly stands out. It wasn’t just me thinking this dude knows his onions; two other OAPs did as well. Sato from Vibes FM says ‘Rooky is a major prospect’ while Joyce from RhythmFm Benin says ‘This homeboy is super talented.’ Rooky Kamiz is a final year student at the University of Benin, with a talent that cuts across modelling, poetry and performing artistry. Rooky seems to be all made up before graduation. I took a ride with him for a quick conversation.

‘My name is Rooky Kamiz real name Jegede-ikpen Rukevwe. I am a full-fledged entertainer owing to my huge involvement in broadcasting, event hosting, modelling, and comedy, spoken and written word artistry. The biggest of them all is my greatest passion, music. I hail from Ughelli North, Delta State. I am a final year student of the University of Benin studying Adult and Non formal Education with English and Literature as major.

‘I have worked as an On Air Personality for Campus radio UnibenFM 100.1 and also Urban Radio Rhythm FM 93.7 Benin City. I modelled for Els Culture Modelling Agency and also worked as a social media influencer for Guinness Nigeria (Guinness African Special campaign) and Smirnoff Ice Party Benin. These and more are products of my dexterity, creative energy and will power for success. My musical interest was caught way back as a kid listening to songs from Michael Jackson, 2pac and Elton John. Since then I’ve had a burning zeal to create melody and sounds.

‘This led me to become a chorister around 2009 and by 2013, I had left the choir and starred in two teenage school influenced musical albums for my secondary school, Lumen Christi International High School, Uromi. I took a hiatus in2014 to work on my art and music as well as exploring other talents and creative levels of my personality. Now I’m back in 2017 to showcase my lyrical prowess to the world. I recently released my debut single titled ‘Freedom ’featuring Juzt Jerry, produced by Mynorkord. The cover art was done by Stilez graphics. It can be found on my Sound Cloud page and my website Rookykamiz.com. I will describe my music as dynamic, poetic, emotional and wavy with sounds
hovering around Hip-hop, Trap, Electronic and Pop so get set to be mind blown. I am currently working on my mixtape which is titled ‘The Experiment: Tape scheduled for release after my second single titled ‘Runs Girl’ featuring Acesinger Esbee is officially public’ – Rooky Kamiz.
