SHEYE BANKS THE BADASS OAP AND HYPEMAN
“I initially decided to get on radio out of anger and
lack of will from many presenters to promote good music in Nigeria but I
found my passion and love for the job along the way’- Sheye Banks
If there’s anyone #kinda causing positive disruption within the
establishment in the Hypeman orbit right now, Sheye Banks is that spark
light. If we need drain the swamp in the broadcasting industry to remove
OAPs that are no longer inspiring in order to replace them with those that
are entertaining, energetic and educating in real time, Sheye Banks is one
of those leading that generation of game changers.
Forget the radio ratings, if you listen to Sheye on Kiss 98.9 FM Lagos, you
will get that nostalgia when music commentary on radio was handled by some
of the best OAPs of yesteryears. Daily, within the hours of 11am – 3pm, his
Midday shows gets his audience awestruck. With him, there’s no blabbing or
lazy presentation associated with some of the slay queens and diva kings on
radio today. His playlist is garden-fresh; you discover new talents on his
show weekly. This is where most of his colleagues have failed. Laziness and
payola have restricted them to the same playlist every week. They are the
ones killing the industry. The likes of Sheye Banks are giving potential
creative talents a lease of life on air and also on activations such as
Basement gig where he’s the Hypeman.
He experienced first-hand radio at Ashford Hospital Broadcasting Service
(AHBS), in the United Kingdom and then returned to Nigeria to join the
first campus radio station University of Lagos FM (Unilag FM) and there he
worked as a radio presenter for various shows before leaving Lagos to join
the Kiss FM franchise only to return back to the city of Lagos in 2016.
According to him, “I initially decided to get on radio out of anger and
lack of will from many presenters to promote good music in Nigeria but I
found my passion and love for the job along the way. My sound and style is
influenced by icons such as DJ Trevor Nelson, Fatman Scoop, Sway,
Charlemagne Tha god, Angie Martinez, Dan Foster, Funmi Iyanda, Mo Abudu and
Olisa Adibua”.
The quick-seasoned individual has bagged several nominations and awards
including the nominations as Best Presenter at The prestigious Nigerian
Broadcasters Merit Awards 2015, Best Presenter nominee and Best Radio
Program nominee at the Scream Awards 2015, Voice of The Year nominee at the
Scream Awards 2016, OAP of The Year at the Campuses Hubb Awards, OAP of The
Year nominee at the Scream Awards 2017 and Winner of Outstanding OAP at the
Pearl Awards 2016.
He’s the host for the *Midday on Kiss*, *Club 98* with *Dj Flammzy*, *Kiss
Upcomers Chart Show *and *Alternative Sunday* on 98.9 Kiss FM Lagos.
The Hypeman side of him started as a hobby that turned into something that
gladly became productive and profitable. During his service year, Sheye was
handed the opportunity to host events and hype at the parties in the NYSC
orientation camp. This led to him being discovered by event promoters that
shaped the hobby into a career. He has since distinguished himself as a
wedding hypeman and a hypeman for mainstream and alternative themed events.
