The conversation for months will be about which rappers have sold-out on
the altar of pop demands but I personally think we should also be asking
the question: “How many rappers have also developed protégées like Dr. Dre
did with Kendrick Lamar?” We can’t be talking about the problems when we
fail to identify the cause. Several young rappers have no mentor to look up
to or get support from but still, most of them are keeping it real. One of
the rappers on the rise today is Timi Blaze. He caught eyes at the 2016
Hennessy artistry. With three mix tapes to his credit, this hip-hop addict
also doubles as a producer.

LET’S TALK ABOUT YOUR MIX TAPES

“First and foremost, let me introduce myself. My name is
Oluwadurotimi Dawodu and I go by the stage name Timi Blaze, some people
call me Genius. I’m a Lagos born and bred rapper, singer and music producer. My
first mix tape ‘Just b4 I begin’ was released in 2015 on April 13th and it
was basically me introducing myself to the industry. In July 2016 I
released my second tape ‘The genius Tape’ in which basically I was rapping
over the billboard topping hits of 2015-2016, my aim was to do each cover
on the mix tape better than the original song, you know one way to show
people how good you are is to take a song which is already popular and out
rap the original artiste, that was exactly my aim and I’m sure I did a
great job because I got about 4 songs out of the 8 track mix tape aired on
top radio stations in Lagos including Beat FM despite the fact that I never
took my songs there.

“’Young Boy with a Dream’ is my current mix tape. YBWAD is a motivational
rap project where I basically just poured out my heart telling my story,
motivating others that they can make it, because I believe rap can change
the world, we all know rap is the most influential genre in the world and I
wanna change the world using rap and music as my tool. My music is
different; my lines pass a message even on my party tracks. I am a very
different person, my perspectives to things are different and when you
listen to ‘Young Boy with a Dream’ you get my perspective of things. A lot
of people don’t believe in themselves, they look at the superstars and the
rich and they crawl back into their shell. ‘Young Boy with a Dream’ mix
tape basically reminds you that every big name you know was once a Young Boy
with a Dream, so don’t be scared. I’m currently recording ‘The genius Tape
2’ which would be out soon.”
