YOU ALL NEED TO KNOW TONY ROSS
‘...if you are one of the few that jammed to Cynthia Morgan’s songs like ‘German
Juice,’ ‘I’m Taken,’ ‘Simati Niya,’ and ‘Bubble Bup,’ then you have done
all that because @TonyRossbeat is the man behind the beat….’
I’m as guilty as anyone that has slept on Tony Ross for several years
despite the fact that we have molded a star etched from his works without
pausing for few minutes to pay due respect to this puppet master. If you
are one of the few that jammed to Cynthia Morgan’s songs like ‘German
Juice,’ ‘I’m Taken,’ ‘Simati Niya,’ and ‘Bubble Bup,’ then you have done
all that because Tony Ross is the man behind the beat. He masterminded the
production. He also has production credits for the likes of Illbliss,
P’square, Phyno, Cyrus Tha Virus, AY Tanzania to name a few. In 2015, he
won ‘Best Producer’ with Cynthia’s German Juice at the SSMA (South-South
Music Awards). He’s one of the few that worked with Cynthia before she got
a record deal with Northside.
What makes Tony Ross tick as a music producer is because there’s more to
him than meets the eyes: Just like his contemporary Maleek Berry, Ross is
also a performing artiste, a true hip-hop head. Born in Edo State, he
started his music journey in the year 2003 when he was handling rap battles
in various hoods with some local rap cats back then in Benin City. He later
merged with Davi Scan to form the group ‘TD blaze.’ Both worked on some
songs and also released videos to two of the tracks ‘Rap game’ and
‘Ridiculous.’ The two joints enjoyed airplay within the Benin environs but
lack of funds halted the music duo. Instead of throwing in the towel, Tony
found joy in music production. ‘I majored in music production because I was
tired of the garbage the system was churning out.’ – Tony Ross.
As a rapper in 2009, he released an unofficial album titled ‘H.O.D’ which
was an acronym for ‘Hustle or die.’ 2011 came with the album
‘#Sep11themixtape.’ Tony Ross is presently getting ready to release an EP
titled ‘Progress.’ Off that EP, three singles are already out enjoying
airplay. He has put out ‘Twerk it’ featuring Phyno & Cynthia Morgan, ‘Over
do’ featuring Wilfred, and ‘Zen Zen Zen’ featuring Magnito and Davi Scan.
