DAISY OLOWU – ‘Queen Of The Night Hour’ on Cool 96.9FM Kano

The connection that you make with the Night radio fans (your listeners of course) is one that portrays your relationship as more than just an OAP and a listener. I connect to my listeners as a friend, a voice, a pusha (if you know what i mean), an inspiration, a doctor, a gossip partner… lol.

Words by Sesan Adeniji

If the north remains central to the paradigm shift in politics, then broadcasting and broadcasters must lead the pack in helping to constructively shape cultural and liberal perspectives in that zone.

While a legion of OAPs in the west are obsessed calling themselves #influencers, the likes of Daisy Oyindamola Olowu of Cool 96.9FM Kano are actually the ones truly influencing and impacting those that really needed impetus for a fulfilling daily life in a some-what conservative environment.

Hip, witty and calm, Daisy’s nighttime shows delivers presentations and music selections that create an environment for reassurance to those on the brink of economic –emotional and psychological topsy-turvy. From the moment she put on the microphone, everything good comes alive.

“I grew up shuttling between Kano, Ibadan, Lagos and Akure. I’m from a family of 5 boys and just 2 girls, so it was right to say the house was a hood. Having lived in a couple of places, I understood what diversity meant and it only made me hunger to know even more.

I set out to the mid-belt for my tertiary education (Makurdi, Benue State precisely) where in 300l(2010) I walked into a radio station (Radio Nigeria, Harvest FM) just to try out at an audition I heard friends talking about. Got picked and employed as a freelance presenter – that was how the journey started.

Moved on to co-host a show on Radio Benue after that still as a freelance presenter. When I finished studying in school, I had already lost interest in practicing as a computer scientist, so I decided to continue on the path. So I went for training in Lagos and got employment afterward with Galaxy television and decided to change description for a bit.

JOURNALISM proper. I’m talking hardcore current affairs. Having gained some experience, I heed clarion call (NYSC). Served in Benin City and it was just right to find where I was most comfortable in terms of profession. My place of primary assignment was ITV/Radio and after service year got retained. Was on several shows on radio and TV from the ‘Morning Train’ to the ‘Afternoon Cruise’, ‘Fashion Trend’, ‘Memories’, ‘Gospel Countdown’ and even the night show. My favorite was the ‘Sunday Morning Cruise’ lol.

In 2015, I left Benin City to Lagos, back to television and then to Ibadan
where I strictly majored in News and Current affairs. In 2017, I decided I miss radio and to be real, I had not experienced what working in the North felt so, I packed my bags and the next stop was Cool96.9FM Kano where I currently Co-host the ‘Night Café’ and host the ‘Sunday Evening Cruise’.

Kindly talk more about your shows?

I co-host the “Night Café. Which runs from 8pm-1am and I also host the ‘Sunday
Evening Cruise’ – 6pm – 12am. I’m sure you’re like wooooooo Night Radio. lol
Yes Night Radio! I love music. I grew up in that family where we all competed to be the first to buy a tape and CD (when it became the thing). Music for me has always been food to the soul and the thing with night radio is; you can go all out to express yourself through music (especially if you’re a music brain).

The connection that you make with the Night radio fans (your listeners of course) is one that portrays your relationship as more than just an OAP and a listener. I connect to my listeners as a friend, a voice, a pusha (if you know what i mean), an inspiration, a doctor, a gossip partner… lol. The idea of my show is to help you transition into the next day better than you were the previous day. So I’m not just educating, entertaining, informing you, I’m soothing your deepest
emotions, I’m there for you when you’re at your most vulnerable (the night). When you’re tired and have let your guard down, I’m there to make you safe, the depth of that connection, makes the ‘Night Café’ and ‘Sunday Evening Cruise’ really special. But as serious as they may sound, we can be very goofy. lol

Being in this part of the world, my eyes are opened to the fact that no matter how many we (OAPs) are, so many people aren’t still served. So, we need to be louder and more penetrating. I intend to spread across more genre of broadcast journalism. Will leave it at that.

I have never heard Daisy but I imagine what a capable hand she must be because of her background. It’s a good first impression this read has made on me, about her.
